Billing Assistance
If you have insurance to cover your service, the Registrar will need to make a copy of your card. This will help us as well as the physicians involved in your care bill your insurance correctly and timely. It is important that all insurance information be provided at the time of registration.
Most insurance plans require that your service be pre-certified or pre-approved. The information you need is on the back of your insurance card and usually involves only a call from you to notify them that your physician has ordered the medical service. Failure to do this may result in a significant increase in your out-of-pocket expense.
If you are without insurance coverage, the hospital is happy to work with you on a mutually acceptable payment plan.
In addition to a bill from Southwest Memorial Hospital, you may receive a separate statement from independent physicians for his or her professional services. These may include statements from anesthesiologists, consulting physicians, radiologists or others who have been consulted about your medical problem.
Hospital bills can sometimes be confusing and very difficult to understand. If you or someone you know has a billing concern, please contact the billing department. The Business Office is open 8:00 am 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Please contact us at 970-565-6666. A representative will take time to work with you to resolve your concerns. There may be times when you will get voice mail. Please leave a message and a representative will return your call promptly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can I do to make sure my services are covered by my insurance?
More and more insurance plans, and all Managed Care plans, require and authorization prior to having the services received. We do our best to call for you on outpatient visits but it is hard to catch everyone. You should call your insurance in case we have not been able to. For emergency room visits, it is against the law to prevent you from having the necessary screening tests and stabilizing treatment prior to notifying your insurance carrier. You will, however, need to notify the insurance within 24 hours of your treatment or payment may be denied.
For all Inpatient or scheduled elective surgeries, we will contact your insurance company and obtain all required authorizations. If authorization is denied for any reason, we will notify your doctor.
What will this visit cost? For most outpatient tests such as lab and x-rays, we can tell you the charge. For surgeries or Inpatient stays, we can give you an estimate based on the current average cost for your particular diagnosis or procedure.
I need care but I dont have insurance. Can I still be treated?
We do not turn anyone away who needs treatment. We may be able to assist you with financial aid. We have programs called Hill-Burton and CICP, which are based solely on income. We also have a Medicaid eligibility staff person available to help walk you through the process of applying for Medicaid. We do prefer payment of the balance in full at the time of service; payment plans are available to those who need to make payments.
I need to talk to someone who knows all about Medicare. Do you have specialized staff that handles Medicare?
Yes. The Billing Office has a staff of very knowledgeable, experienced employees who are familiar with many aspects of various insurance companies. However, each individual is solely responsible for her own particular financial classes. We currently have 2 Medicare billers.
