Physical Therapy
Southwest Memorial Hospital offers Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy at the Southwest Memorial Annex building at 20 South Market in Cortez.
Physical Therapy – Using a variety of integrative techniques the department is committed to enhancing the quality of life for outpatients. We focus on managing pain, injury prevention, and bringing a patient to pre injury state of wellness.
Some of the techniques offered are:
*Anodyne Therapy is infrared light used with wounds and diabetic neuropathy.
*Neuromuscular Re-education is an approach used in the management of movement and postural dysfunction.
*CranioSacral Therapy uses gentle, palpatory techniques to normalize the inherent physiological motion created by the flow of cerebrospinal fluid with the meningeal membranes of the brain and spinal cord. This rhythmic activity is intimately related to the function of the nervous, musculolskeletal and endocrine systems of the body.
*Myofascial Release is a sensitive, manual technique used to restore the organization of the body’s structures by altering the tissue tension and pressure relationships created by fascial restrictions.
The Physical Therapy Department of Southwest Memorial Hospital works closely with the patient’s physician to provide exercise and rehabilitation of muscle groups, joints, and areas of the body that have been traumatized by injury or surgery. The department offers strengthening and work conditioning programs. Gait training, crutch and walker training are available for those patients who are unstable after surgery or injury. A variety of modalities are incorporated for the patients treatments, including electrical stimulation, manual manipulation, heat and ice, and exercise programs using a plethora of gym equipment on site and home exercise programs designed individually, with specific goals in mind.
Southwest Memorial Hospital also offers inpatient physical therapy to patients while they are in the hospital. Physical therapist provide services that help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. Patients include accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries and cerebral palsy. They help mobilize patients following surgery such as hip and knee replacement. Therapists provide specialized and individualized evaluation and treatment of patients of all ages, working closely with physicians and the nursing staff to ensure quality patient care. These services are available for inpatients seven days a week.
Physical Therapists have either a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in physical Therapy and are required to be licensed in the state in which they practice. They are encouraged to continue their education or specialize in a certain area. Physical therapy aides are trained specifically to work with the physical therapist and must have a CNA license.
Occupational Therapy – A health and rehabilitation profession that helps individuals achieve independence in their lives despite disabilities. Occupational therapists work with people of all ages, who, because of physical development, social or emotional problems, needs specialized assistance to lead productive and satisfying lives.
