Exercise Programs The exercise prescription is a guide to developing an
individualized exercise program based on patient symptoms and condition.
Fatigue Fatigue is multifactorial and probably has many causes.
Cancer treatments
facilitate production of free radicals which
destroy cells and affect organ function. Gastrointestinal toxicity creates a loss of body nutrients, fluids, electrolytes and alters the
metabolism. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and loss of appetite.
Myelosuppression is the inhibition of bone marrow function which
causes lower red blood cells (anemia), loss of oxygen carrying capacity, making
the heart work harder. Muscle
degeneration is muscle wasting
after chemotherapy and radiation. There is destruction of skeletal muscle tissue
and an increase in muscular weakness. Impairment in cognitive functioning such as decreased attention and impaired
perception and thinking is associated with fatigue, including depression,
anxiety and changes in social patterns. |
