What are the different types of rehabilitation?
The three main types of rehabilitation therapy are occupational, physical, and speech. Each form of rehabilitation serves a unique purpose in helping a person reach full recovery, but all share the ultimate goal of helping the patient return to a healthy and active lifestyle.
Physical Therapy (PT)
The Physical Therapy Department of Southwest Memorial Hospital works closely with patients and their physicians to provide exercise and rehabilitation of muscle groups, joints, and areas of the body that have been traumatized by injury or surgery. The department offers strengthening and work conditioning programs. Gait training, crutch, and walker training are available for those patients who are unstable after surgery or injury.
We use a variety of integral physical therapy techniques to enhance the quality of life for patients. We focus on pain management, injury prevention, and bringing individuals to their pre-injury state of wellness. We offer pre-employment screening through the WorkWell program. A variety of modalities are incorporated for the patient’s treatments, including electrical stimulation, manual manipulation, dry needling, heat and ice, and exercise programs using a plethora of gym equipment on-site and home exercise programs designed with the patient’s specific goals in mind.
Physical therapists provide services that help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. Patients include accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries, and cerebral palsy. They help mobilize patients following surgery such as hip and knee replacement. Therapists provide specialized and individualized evaluation and treatment of patients of all ages, working closely with physicians and the nursing staff to ensure quality patient care.
Occupational Therapy (OT)
Occupational therapists work on a variety of problems. For example, they might help a patient learn to dress themselves again after undergoing major surgery or suffering an injury. They evaluate home environments to recommend equipment and modifications for safety and showering. They might adapt or recommend equipment to assist in daily living tasks for a patient who has had a hip replacement or to allow a multiple sclerosis or spinal cord patient to maximize their independence with tasks such as using a computer or feeding themselves. Speech Therapy (ST)
Speech therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication problems and speech disorders. It is performed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs), which are often referred to as speech therapists.
Speech therapy techniques are used to improve communication. These include articulation therapy, language intervention activities, and others depending on the type of speech or language disorder.
Speech therapy may be needed for speech disorders that develop in childhood or speech impairments in adults caused by an injury or illness, such as stroke, or brain injury. MORE
